Important Notice: Encryption Migration
Android 14 has officially removed support for Full Disk Encryption (FDE) and only allows File Based Encryption. While we supported both modes in Android 13 to allow for a gradual transition, Google now mandates FBE as the sole encryption architecture.
![]() | FDE: Encrypts the entire storage as one "locked box." |
![]() | FBE: Encrypts files individually, allowing for higher security and "Direct Boot" (where the device can perform essential tasks like receiving calls or alarms before the user enters a PIN). |
Unfortunately, changing the encryption type needs a factory reset on the device.
For any devices still utilizing the older encryption type, a complete factory reset is required to re-partition the storage into the FBE format. This is a one-time structural change that was optional in Android 13 but is now the single option for Android 14.
If you already performed this factory reset when upgrading to Android 13, you are unaffected. Devices originally shipped with Android 13 are also already using FBE and ready to upgrade.
Because of these restrictions, the upgrade will only be visible to devices already running FBE.
How to check your encryption type:
![]() | The encryption tpye is directly visible in the security settings of your MDM. "file" means FBE (upgrade ready), while "block" means FDE (factory reset necessary) |
![]() | Restart the device. If the device shows a prompt saying "Enter PIN to start Android" immediately after the boot logo (on a black/static screen), you are running FDE. |
![]() | Restart the device. If the device boots to the main lock screen and can receive phone calls without being unlocked first, you are running FBE and can upgrade immediately. |
If your device does not see the upgrade to Android 14 it may cause due one of more circumstances. In all cases please contact your local IT first to avoid issues while or after the upgrade.
Possible reasons for not seeing the upgrade can be
![]() | The device does not have an internet connection or the connection to the Google Servers is blocked by your IT. |
![]() | Time and Date isn't set correct. Wrong time settings cause, that the GOTA Update Server (GOTA=Google Over-The-Air) will not provide you the update. Please make sure, Time and Date is set correct. |
![]() | Your Local IT did not release the Android 14 Upgrade and is blocking it. Contact your Local IT if they will release for you. |
![]() | Your device was delivered once with Android 9 or 10 and never got processed a Factory Reset since upgraded to Android 13. In this case it is mandatory to process a factory reset to be able to upgrade. Reason for this was a change from Full Disk Encryption to File Based Encryption. Android 13 was able to run with both, while for Android 14 it is obligatory to run at File Based Encryption, which is the more modern and secure encryption mode. While a factory reset at Android 13 the device is changing the Encryption type. |
